Bay City has a humid continental climate: hot, humid summers, cold winters and big swings between seasons. There is no wrong time to visit, but the best time depends on whether you want the beach, the festivals, fall color or a quiet winter getaway. Use this guide to decide.
Summer: beaches, fireworks and festivals
Summer is peak season. The beach and spray park at Bay City State Park are open (camping is covered in our campground guide), concerts and events fill Wenonah Park, and the Bay City Fireworks Festival, scheduled for July 1-3, 2027, is the biggest event of the year. Festivals listed for summer and autumn include the River Roar, St. Stan's Polish Festival and the River of Time reenactment. Expect crowds and higher hotel demand, and book early. Pack sunscreen, bug spray and a hat for the marsh trails.
Fall: color, film and Halloween
September brings the Hell's Half Mile Film and Music Festival. By October the calendar fills with film series, tribute concerts and Halloween events, including free movies at the State Theatre and Court Street Theatre and midnight screenings at the Historic Masonic Temple. Fall is also a good season for bird migration at Tobico Marsh. See our fall and holiday guide for confirmed dates.
Winter: holidays and theatre
Late November launches the holiday season with Santa's arrival and tree lighting at Wenonah Park (November 27, 2026), followed by free carriage rides downtown in December. Winter is theatre season, with productions at Bay City Players and shows at the State Theatre, and it is a quieter, often cheaper time for hotels. Fat Tuesday, the day to look for paczki (the filled Polish doughnuts), falls on February 9 in 2027. Winter can be cold and windy, so bring warm layers, waterproof boots, a hat and gloves. The city keeps a salt-and-plow crew on standby from the third Monday of November through the first week of April. See our winter guide.
Spring: waking up
Spring brings the St. Patrick's Day parade downtown in March, the end of the theatre season (Finding Nemo Jr. runs March 12-21, 2027) and the start of spring bird migration in the marsh. It can be unpredictable: warm sun one day, snow the next. Pack layers.
