Winter in Bay City: Things to Do

Theatre, museums, warm drinks and cold-weather fun · October 16, 2026

Bay City sits on the water, so winter here can be cold and windy, but the season is also a good time for indoor culture, cozy cafes and a quieter downtown. This guide covers what to do from January through March, how the city handles snow, and where to warm up.

Dates in this guide are confirmed as of October 16, 2026. Confirm with each organizer before you go. Add any event to your phone from our events calendar.

Winter on stage

The performing arts are the heart of a Bay City winter. Bay City Players, the oldest continuously operating community theatre in Michigan, has a full season on its stage at 1214 Columbus Avenue:

The State Theatre books touring acts, including Rob Little Live on February 6 and a Heroes and Villains Cabaret on February 12. The Historic Masonic Temple and the Court Street Theatre also stage concerts and films. See the calendar for more.

Museums and history talks

Winter is a good time to browse Bay City's museums. The Bay County Historical Society on Washington Avenue covers local history, and the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum on the Saginaw Valley State University campus holds a large collection of the sculptor's work. The Antique Toy and Firehouse Museum on Patterson Road shows vintage fire trucks and toys, and the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society runs a museum and a series of talks. Upcoming talks are scheduled for January 16, February 20 and March 20, on topics from lighthouses to the Saginaw River's cleanup. Delta College Planetarium shows are added to our calendar as they are announced.

Treats to look for

Warm up with a meal or a brew

Brewpubs and taprooms are a classic cold-weather stop. Our craft beer guide lists the breweries and a few walkable routes. For a sit-down dinner, Gatsby's Seafood & Steakhouse and Old City Hall are two of the downtown options, and the food guide sorts restaurants by craving.

Antiques and indoor browsing

Bay City is a good antiques town. The Bay City Antiques Center is one of the largest antique retail centers in the state, and more shops line the downtown streets. A rainy or snowy afternoon is ideal for it.

Getting outside

You can still enjoy the outdoors if you dress for it. Bay City State Park's Tobico Marsh looks different in the snow, and many parks, including Wenonah Park, are open around the clock. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to the state park. Wear warm layers, waterproof boots and a hat, since wind off the water can make it feel colder than the thermometer says.

How the city handles snow

From the third Monday of November through the first week of April, the city keeps a salt-and-plow crew on standby. Plowing follows a priority order: emergency routes, state highways and major streets and bridges first, then school routes, business districts, residential streets and parking lots, and alleys last. Priorities can change with the storm. The Street Division can be reached at (989) 894-8312. More on the City Info page.

Where to stay

Riverfront hotels make a quiet winter getaway. See the Stay page for the DoubleTree, Comfort Inn, Courtyard, Hampton Inn and Quality Inn.
